Modern Foreign Languages

Overview

We believe learning a foreign language is an integral part of being a member of a diverse and multi-cultural society and provides an opening to the wider world. It allows a liberation from insularity and affords children the opportunity to be immersed in other cultures.

The intent of the MFL curriculum at Holy Trinity C of E Primary School is firmly rooted in our school’s vision that children flourish and live well together, embracing difference and treating everyone with respect in our school, community and the wider world.

We aim to identify and unlock God given talent so children can realise their potential to become confident in all areas of MFL and achieve aspirational goals. Children are encouraged to respect the ideas, feelings, attitudes, values of others regardless of race and culture and our unwavering Christian Ethos towards all aspects of school life underpins this.

A high-quality languages education should at its heart foster children’s curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. Teaching will enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to listen and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It should also provide rich opportunities for children to immerse themselves in another culture whilst creating and exchanging meaning within and across the target language.

From 2023, we have taken on exciting opportunities to link with schools across continents to find out more about different languages and culture. To date, we have links with China and France.

The national curriculum for languages aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
  • speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the
  • accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
  • write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using a variety of grammatical structures they have learnt
  • discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the target language.

At Holy Trinity School, children have weekly lessons in French throughout Key Stage 2, using Language Angels programme of study in addition to other resources.

Areas covered include:
numbers, colours, food, diet, house and home, the classroom, clothes and hobbies.

At the end of Key Stage 2, it is intended children leave Holy Trinity with a natural curiosity and a confidence to explore other countries, languages and cultures and will be prepared to continue language learning in Key Stage 3. As a result, children will thrive and flourish whilst being prepared to become responsible citizens.
